The cause of her illness was not disclosed but led to speculation that she was suffering from pancreatic cancer.
The queen of soul reportedly met the dashing former firefighter at an autograph-signing session in her hometown, Detroit, in the early 1980s.
The gregarious Wilkerson is said to have asked the star to sign the cast on his broken leg, sparking friendship which bloomed into romance.
At the age of fourteen, her dad became her manager taking her on tours to perform in various churches and church gatherings. Records and by 1956, she released her first album titled Songs of Faith.
Her father also got her signed to her first record deal with J. Two of her singles “Never Grow Old” and “Precious Lord, Take My Hand”, were released to gospel radio stations.
